Mission Statement: The aim of the show is to broaden public awareness of contemporary ceramic art and to provide a venue for Massachusetts' clay artists to display recent, original, innovative work.
Exhibition Dates : May 15 - June 13, 2021
The 11th biennial State of Clay contains 72 pieces of original ceramic artwork made by clay artists who live in or have ties to the state of Massachusetts. Artwork was chosen for innovative vision and creative accomplishment. The gallery viewer will see a breadth of ceramic styles, building methods, and firing techniques. The work ranges from abstract to utilitarian, from functional pottery to concept-driven sculpture.
The selected artists come from many backgrounds. They are educators, home studio artists, craft group members, established professionals, and emerging artists. Each has found clay to be an inspiring medium for artistic creativity. Their personal vision and skill has re-shaped formless lumps of clay into singular works of art.
The Ceramic Guild of LexArt began the State of Clay in 1997, hosting all eleven shows. The Virtual Artist Reception on Sunday, May 23 will feature Julia Galloway, this year’s juror. Julia will announce award winners, discuss her jurying process, and be available for questions.
