Cetus
$2,400
24 x 25 x 2
Soda Fired Ceramic Wall Mount
Through ceramic sculpture I hope to bring to attention a dynamic between the tamed and the untamed. I often sculpt toothy, questionably domesticated, misunderstood beasts - sometimes with human hands or feet. These emblems often appear crying or curled up representing inner swirling human emotions and the implications of otherness.
Red Basket
$2,400
21 x 19.5 x 7
Glazed earthenware, fired in an electric kiln to cone 01
This was built with large coils and then carved. The carving melds the surface design and the form so they are integral to each other. The large handles extend the carving and envelop the space within. The sculpture references a basket, but also a landscape to explore, inside and out.
Snowdrift
$1,800
12 x 17 x 18
Brown Stoneware with porcelain slip. Fired to cone 10 in the soda chamber of a wood kiln.
Generous in volume, contemplative yet dynamic, I create large coil-built vessels that prompt a desire to touch, climb in, or embrace. Conveying resilience and beauty, I draw on the New England landscape for inspiration; ocean waves, clouds at dusk drawing pink lines across the sky, snow-coated fields in winter.
Bound
$4,000
21 x 20 x 13
T6B Stoneware from Sheffield Pottery
Young men are bound by social norms and biases about who they’re supposed to become. They’re also bound to break free from that which binds them. This is a coming of age portrait influenced by Baroque sculpture which I studied on a recent trip to Italy.
Beehive
$10,000
29 x 9 x 9
white stoneware, graphic powder and pencil, gold acrylic paint
Hollow built from a clay slab cylinder that is formed and modeled from the inside and outside. Graphite powder is layered on the surface to achieve light and dark gray tones. Graphite pencil accents hair.
Utensil Holder in Red and White
$70
8 x 4 x 7
brown stoneware fired to cone 6
My work involves using rigid slabs to build functional artwork. Working in this way adds a structural component to each piece that appeals to my sense of order. The resulting smooth, vertical surfaces are a perfect canvas for layering glazes to achieve a fluid and dynamic finish to each piece.
Owl and Friend
$2,500
21.5 x 8.5 x 10
Clay with colored slips on a bluestone base
My formal training began with figure drawing. I immediately fell in love with gestures. Line and immediacy, the nuances that make the whole drawing comes alive. I bring that sensibility to my clay work, beginning with a quick gesture. Slowly, the piece is refined, with subtleties that animate the piece.
