Description

Partial installation of 32 ceramic handguns with opposing points of view in the gun debate stamped into the barrels. Addressing issues of race, domestic violence and mental illness among others, Recoil asks the viewer to consider an alternative viewpoint and seeks to start a long overdue conversation. Porcelain press mold construction, stains & graphite, shell casings.

Description

Stoneware, wheelthrown, oxidation kiln c/6, underglaze, monoprinted & stamped.

Short Statement

The floral design was hand painted with black underglaze on paper and transferred onto the wet-leatherhard plate. Small dots were then imprinted into the wet clay around the design. Once bisqued, washes of black underglaze were applied to the floral design to create shadows. A clear, glossy glaze was applied and the piece was fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln.

My intent was to make the viewer feel like the octopus is grasping the pot, with a sense of the deep blue sea all around.

I made this piece around the same time as the Stonewall Riot 50th Anniversary. As I was glazing the flowers with the glaze dots, I entered a meditative state of mind thinking about ALL LGBTQ people and their stories...

Short Statement

Lobster Bouquet was created during my time at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in summer 2019. The piece toys with the gruesome truth behind the socioeconomics of lobster. Who can and can't afford to indulge. And by Indulge I mean cracking apart legs, slurping meat out of claws, dosing everything in butter. You can't look classy eating a lobster.
