These large carved wall tiles that are monumental in size and scale. I flattened the carved surface by using a matte glaze. I intended them to look like a sheet of metal. These pieces are been hung off the wall to show the raw edge and highlights its visual weight.

Short Statement

Susan Arnott is a ceramic artist in Cambridge, MA, who draws inspiration from colors, patterns and marks in natural and built environments. Using slabs, slips, underglazes and mark-making tools, she creates hand-built, functional vessels that suggest patina, residue, imprints left behind.

"Mom... what should I do?" I'd ask growing up, like all children do. As a busy single mother, she had a constant response: "Draw kids playing at the beach." I'd scoff and find another amusement. Today, I hope to honor her and finally draw kids playing at the beach.

Though I worked from a live model, I diverged into creating a narrative by placing the figure on a bed of lily pads and adding a frog at which the figure is wistfully contemplating.

I am currently creating my own kind of mythological creatures, a blend of toad and frog that incorporate human faces and gestures. Experimentation has been my style, humor my trademark, and the human condition my guide. My inspiration comes from my own mind, my family, and life's daily surprises.
